VioloncelleRésumé : This string trio is a very early work by Holst, who is best known for “The Planets”. It was written while he was still a student, but it is, nevertheless, a mature piece worthy of a place in the string trio repertoire. It is technically quite accessible for competent players. Gustav Holst was born in Cheltenham in 1874 and died in 1934. He started composing while he was still at Cheltenham Grammar School and later went on to study under Stanford (also published by SJ Music) at the Royal College of Music. There he met fellow student Vaughan Williams in 1895 and they became lifelong friends. In 1905 he was appointed Director of Music at St Paul's Girls' school, a post he kept until the end of his life. He was also in charge of music at Morley College (south London) for a while and later taught at the Royal College of Music. Titre : String trio in B flat major D.471 : (Violin, Viola and Violoncello) Completion of Schubert's fragment by Brian Newbould Type de document : partition musicale imprimée Auteurs : Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Compositeur ; Brian Newbould, Editeur scientifique Editeur : SJ Music Année de publication : cop. 2000 Collection : Chamber music series num. T2000-6 Importance : 3 partitions (11, 11, 8 p.) Format : 30 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : SJT2000-6 Note générale : This string trio was only partly written by Schubert, and has been finished by the Schubert expert Brian Newbould. It is a charming work, and Newbould has done a wonderful job in creating a full length trio in the style of Schubert and using quotations from other Schubert works, as Schubert himself did on occasion.
The Schubert catalogue lists two string trios. The second is a complete work in B flat major (D.581), which survives in an autograph dated September 1817. The earlier work, also in B flat major (D.471), is a fragment dated September 1816 in the autograph. Schubert finished the first movement and wrote 39 bars of a slow movement in E flat major. There is no trace of a third or fourth movement. Schubert appears to have put down his pen early in the slow movement and never taken it up again. Brian Newbould’s completion of D.471, finished in July 2000, was commissioned by the Leopold String Trio. A full note about the creation of this piece is included as a preface in the printed music.Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Alto (violon)
