VioloncelleRésumé : These duets for violin and cello are pleasant and without technical difficulties. There are six duets, and we have published them in three sets of two. They were composed by Joseph Gehot who was born in Brussels in 1756, moved to the USA in 1792, and died there circa 1820. He was a violinist, composer and teacher and amongst his compositions were numerous string quartets, trios and duos. In 1991, “Musique en Wallonie” was set up in Belgium with the goal of discovering the rich musical heritage of the region and finding works of composers that had fallen into undeserved oblivion. Joseph Gehot is one of the composers who was selected, and this was the first piece published by SJ Music! Q2014-1 Importance : 5 partitions (12, 8, 8, 7, 7 p.) Format : 30 cm Accompagnement : score ISBN/ISSN/EAN : M708807933 Note générale : Bach would almost certainly have approved of this string quartet arrangement of his famous concerto for violin and oboe (BWV 1060) by John Cooley as he was well known for making arrangements of his own works, according to instrumental resources at his disposal. Bach himself made an arrangement of this piece for two solo harpsichords and string orchestra. It is quite “notey” but straightforward and accessible technically to reasonably good players as there are no tricky rhythms or high notes. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Alto (violon)

Format : 30 cm Accompagnement : score ISBN/ISSN/EAN : SJQ2001-1 Note générale : Bach would almost certainly have approved of this arrangement of his organ work (BWV 582) for string quartet by John Cooley, as it conveniently has four contrapuntal parts, and he was well known for making arrangements of his own works, according to instrumental resources at his disposal. Moreover, the parts mostly fit well within the ranges of violin, viola and cello, although notes have been raised by an octave in a few places. This quartet version is therefore simply the four parts written out separately, following Bach’s original version note for note. Titre : String quartet in F Op. 8 n° 2 : for 2 violins, viola and violoncello Type de document : partition musicale imprimée Auteurs : Georges Onslow (1784-1853), Compositeur Mention d'édition : Q 1999-4 Editeur : SJ Music Année de publication : cop. 1994 Collection : Chamber music series - score Importance : 4 partitions (12, 7, 7, 7 p.) Format : 30 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : SJQ1999-4 Note générale : This string quartet, along with other chamber works by Onslow, is worthy of serious study alongside works of other composers of the period such as Beethoven. It has a lively and tuneful first movement, a beautiful theme and variations (including a florid variation with an exciting part for 1st violin), a pretty minuet and trio and a rousing final movement. All instruments have interesting parts.
George Onslow, an Anglo-French composer, was born in Clermont-Ferrand in July 1784 and died there in October 1853. He was the grandson of the first Lord Onslow and descended, through his mother, from the family of Brantôme. Although he showed no special love of music in his early years, he later became a prolific composer, particularly of chamber music, including 35 string quartets, (this opus 8 no. 2 in F being the fifth) and 34 string quintets, some for two cellos, some for cello and double bass and some for 2 violas.Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Alto (violon)

Titre : String quartet n° 5 in B flat Op. 104 : for 2 violins, viola and violoncello Type de document : partition musicale imprimée Auteurs : C.V. Stanford (1852-1924), Compositeur Mention d'édition : Q 1998-1 Editeur : SJ Music Année de publication : cop. 1998 Collection : Chamber music series Importance : 4 partitions (12, 7, 7, 7 p.) Format : 30 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : SJQ1998-1 Note générale : This major string quartet, one of eight by Stanford (though only four were ever published), can stand beside other, better known, quartets, both in terms of quality of music and length. In a style that is not dissimilar from Brahms, it has challenging and interesting parts for all four players.
Stanford was born in Dublin in 1852, and died in London in 1924. His musical career started while he was still an undergraduate at Cambridge University, when he was appointed organist at Trinity College and conductor of the Cambridge University Musical Society. In 1882, aged 30, he was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music, where he taught composition for the rest of his life, and where his pupils included rising composers whose fame went on to surpass his own, such as Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Four years later he was also appointed Professor of Music at Cambridge University. This new edition, with minor editing, is based on the original Stainer and Bell edition of 1908, which went out of print.Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Alto (violon)
