String quintet in C major / Michael Haydn
Titre : String quintet in C major : for 2 violins, 2 violas and violoncello or 3 violins, viola and violoncello Type de document : partition musicale imprimée Auteurs : Michael Haydn (1737-1806), Compositeur Mention d'édition : Q 1989-7 Editeur : SJ Music Année de publication : cop. 1989 Collection : Chamber music series Importance : 6 partitions + 1 score Format : 30 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 979-0-7088-0712-4 Note générale : This string quintet (with two violas or three violins) was composed in 1799. It is tuneful and straightforward, and suitable for players who are not yet at the standard required to play the Mozart, Dvorak or Brahms quintets with two violas. This edition has the advantage of having a third violin part included if two viola players are not available. Johann Michael Haydn was the younger brother of his much more famous older brother Franz Joseph – commonly regarded the “father” of the classical string quartet format. Michael was born in 1737 in Rohrau (Lower Austria) and died in Salzburg in 1806. In 1777 he was appointed organist at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in Salzburg when Mozart was that city’s cathedral organist. When Mozart gave up that post in 1781 Haydn took it over, adding it to his work at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche. Michael Haydn is mostly known as composer of sacred music, even though he did, in fact, write a lot of secular music. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Alto (violon)

Titre : String quintet in G : Op. 33 n° 2 : for 2 violins, 2 violas and violoncello Type de document : partition musicale imprimée Auteurs : Louis Spohr (1784-1859), Compositeur Mention d'édition : Q 1993-7 Editeur : SJ Music Année de publication : cop. 1993 Collection : Chamber music series Importance : 5 partitions Format : 30 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 979-0-7088-0737-7 Note générale : This string quintet is one of seven by Spohr, who also wrote 36 string quartets, four double quartets for two string quartets, and an assortment of other quartets, duos, trios, sextets, an octet and a nonet. It is rewarding to play, with a first violin part that is more difficult than the other parts – possibly because Spohr was a virtuoso violinist himself.
Louis (born Ludwig) Spohr was born in 1784 in Braunschweig in the duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and died in 1859 in Kassel, Germany. His first musical encouragement came from his parents: his mother was a gifted singer and pianist, and his father played the flute. A violinist named Dufour gave him his earliest violin teaching. Dufour, recognizing the boy's musical talent, persuaded his parents to send him to Brunswick for further instruction. Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand of Brunswick supported him financially after hearing him play the violin when he was just 15 years old, and he subsequently became well known for both his playing and his compositions throughout Europe.
In 1808, he practised with Beethoven at the latter's home, working on the Piano Trio, Op. 70 No. 1, The Ghost, and a few years later, in 1820, he invented the violin chinrest.Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Alto (violon)
